Week 2, Hands on Project

This week, I am looking into principles of design and Ceramics.

Principles of Design;
Pattern / Contrast / Emphasis / Balance / Proposition / Scale / Harmony / Rhythm / Movement.
I'm starting off with pattern and emphasis because of my personal interests so I decided to do those two in the class then I will completed other in my own time.

Mono-Print
What is mono-print? Mono printing is when you uses a printing materials but only produces one images and are three techniques you can use.
Materials/Equipments : photocopy, pencil, printing ink, print roller and blank paper.

The first techniques is drawing onto the back of paper.
I personally think this is the most easiest techniques to do.
I get all the equipments for the start. After that i drops some printing ink on the perspex, rolls it evenly on the sheet and after I'm surely know it's evenly. I already got my images on top of my blank paper ready, then I drops it on top of the sheet, making sure I'm trying hardest not to touch the paper because once its been drops on top of the ink, whatever press on it, will leave the marks then i starts to draw on top of the images, tracing it and once i completed it, i just remove the paper from the perspex sheet.

Workshop: Ceramics
This week workshop is ceramics. Different from photography, I actually know what to do in this class work because I used to do it back in high school or last year in college.

Starting in the lesson, our tutor wanting to show us an example of what other class have done or what she already made then after that, we were been giving an task to design our own ideas. I got my ideas from one of her sculpture that she made. It's giving me an ideas of how to i should build my sculpture as well. Planning out of how i should build the hand using an hand as well. Making looks like an pattern of hands.

However, before starting our sculpture we need to learn some techniques of how to get rid of air in the clay. The reason why we need to get rid of it, is because when the clay starting to burn up, the airs inside of the clay will be exploded and may ruined the sculpture so that's why it's important to get rid of the airs in the clay.

After learning how to get rid of the air in clay, We beginning to build our own sculpture.
The step that i did is making 5-6 hands then starting to build together. It's may take awhile to stick them up together but this also teach me about problem solving. Learning how to make the sculpture stays in place without crumbles.

Health and Safety in this workshop:
Be careful about the dust in class.
Make sure to clean up after done with the studio.

Some example of the sculpture I made.

Week 1, Hands on Project

This week, i am looking into The Elements of Design, Art criticism and Manual photography.

Elements of Design;
Line / Shape / Space / Texture / Colour / Value / Form. Learning to understand how different techniques can affects art styles. Also explain each definitions.

I choices to start off doing colour and texture because it's what I'm best and enjoy doing the most.

Colour: I choice to do warm and cool colours because it's similar to emotion how we can be cheerful and sorrowful.

What do I learn from this? I learn how to use different warm and cool colours. How it this effects the colour when both colour has a opposite background.
Why did I use this ideas? I wanting to experiment the how warm and cool colour effect eachother and it turn out to be great and I'm really enjoy it.
How did I make it? The material i use is Acrylic colour and soft brushes. Drawing a hand at first with small brushes then after i blending dark and light colour together.
How the quality? The quality of this piece isn't outstanding because what i really wanting to do is experiment the warm and cool colour and i learned from it.

Texture: At first i made a mistake by trying to make collage but realising that's wrong so i change it. Using line paper to stick inside the hands and paint on the background to make the hand looks outstanding. Materials: Line papers, colour hard brushes.

What do i learn from this/Why did I used this ideas? At first I made a mistake by trying to turn Texture into Collage, which it doesn't went well after I realise I done this wrong. I'm trying to rid the collage out so i can create some texture then it turn out well and I'm really like the outcome.
How did i make it/Quality? Because of the mistake i made and turn it into my favor. I uses acrylic paint and hard brushes to paint the background to create the texture. Personal think this work quality is good because even though i made a mistake, i end up fix it and create more texture into work.

Art Criticism
During the group tutorial, we was learning about art criticism. Learning what's meaning of being art criticism, Who were an art criticism in history and what kind of jobs did they do. Art criticism is involves analysing and evaluating every type of art that you can imagine. Find out how to apply it to the art that you want to study, whether it's photography, music, film, sculpture, dance, literature, etc.

Role of an Art Critic
Being Art critic, is to help other viewer understanding the meaning of the art, how they can improve and making a judgement about specific work. there also different type of art criticism, which is Journalistic (Giving out information) and scholarly art (based on original research or experiment). Basically a reviewer, helping other people understanding the art easier. Art Critic isn't just about explains the information to viewer but you also can be a newspaper reporter, a scholar writing for professional or an artist who writing about other artist's work.

Art critic is also focusing on modern and contemporary art from cultures.
-Modern Art: Art from impressionists, around 1880-1970s. During World War II.
-Contemporary Art: From 1970s up to Nowadays.

What do i mean by focusing on modern and contemporary art from cultures is because not every cultures is same, everyone have their own unique art style. We can't just judge the art, saying they're horrible because it wasn't your style but judges them by showing what's different and explain the meanings so you can give them the knowledges to understand art.

Alistair Sooke
Alastair is deputy art critic of The Daily Telegraph and one of Britain's leading arts journalists and broadcasters. Since joining the Telegraph as a trainee in 2003, he has interviewed many of the most famous artists in the world, including Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor and Jeff Koons.

In 2010, he wrote and presented Modern Masters, a four-part series about modern art that was broadcast on Sunday evenings on BBC One. He reports on contemporary art for The Culture Show, and has contributed to a wide range of arts programmes on radio and television. He has an MA in art history.

He is also the presenter of Romancing the Stone: The Golden Ages of British Sculpture, a three-part series tracing the history of British sculpture from the Norman Conquest to the present day, broadcast on BBC Four.

Workshop: Manual Photography
Looking into manual photography basic, such as what's a Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO.
Aperture - the opening in the lens ,
Shutter speed - the amount of time that shutter is open.
ISO - Sensitivity to light. can effect an images.

Even though I don't know much about photography but i still enjoy this lesson because it showing me the different between the quality of photo can be changed, depended of what kind of angle you take, you can change the images and there isn't just one techniques when come to taking an picture.

Heath and Safety in this workshop:
Ensure there no loose cable.
Never leave the studio unattended.

Example of Depth of field:
One that i like the most was Depth of field (Depth of fielded is when the camera can only focus the leans at a single point, making other area blurred.) The reason why i really enjoy this techniques, is because it's focusing on the leans on the point you wanted while other area blurred, creating a great space on the images.

Example of double exposure:
This is an when I'm using Photoshop to turn two different images into a single images. Even though I dislike the way it looks because i didn't know what's double or multiple exposure mean but it's still teaching me the techniques and how affected it is.

Induction week 2, Art and Design L3

Domino's Day
We have an artist come in to help us with understanding what's creative and independence, also share some of his experience with building domino with us. Everyone in the class got to plays around with domino woods and the reason why we are doing this, is because they wanted us to be creative, thinks outside of the box, be able to become independence with only just one item but even with one item, we still can be creative and create something more interesting.

There quite lots that I learn from this lesson, such as become problem solve and independence because I'm understanding how to solve the problem of how to build the dominos without them falling apart and work by myself using my imagination. It also helping me improving my skills of how to think outside of the box, we can do more than just a simple ideas and create it into interesting piece of art work. After everyone building their own ideas up, someone decided we should somehow connected our ideas together, we using a small piece of domino woods to build around eachother and it turns out amazing.

After the half of the day is done, learning how to become self-independence, solving problem and creative, it's time to learn how to teamwork with everyone and bring everyone ideas together so we can create our final work together. Putting the tables around the class to leave a space in the middle, we start building the domino on the table first, everyone just work randomly but at the same time connecting eachother's work together. However not everything always went well, because some of us just accidentally knocked the domino, causing some of the part to break down and we need to rebuild them again, it was quite annoying because it happening a lots but in the end, we found the solution to fix the problem by laying one domino down so when something for knocked again, not everything will be falling down.

All of this making realising that art isn't just about techniques but it's also learning how to become social with everyone, get their ideas and turn it into your inspiration and experimenting the different ideas. However, I didn't create anything interest like everyone else so it's also telling me that i need to work on my creative ideas more with understand how to open my mind and think outside of the box.

I have lots to work on my creative ideas because I couldn't come up with anything too interesting like everyone else but even looks at everyone else's work, I couldn't come up with anything, which it's making me quite disappointed of myself. Not that I wasn't be able to come up with anything good but sometime I just couldn't come up with anything great yet until I start to play with it. However, by end of the day, I realising that I don't need to make it interesting, all I have to do is just make a random patterns or just lets my ideas go wild because being creative isn't just about trying to make it interest but at the same time, to experiment your ideas.

Term 1: Hands on Project
Now we would be starts off by looking into what project we would be do on the first term.
The due time on this project is 5 weeks, everything must be completed. We are looks into basic techniques, materials and processes that we can uses. This may also inspirited by different artists who also draw hands or any part in the bodies.

Drawing using different techniques and how times can affect the drawing.
-One of my drawing, it was a rough hand, almost not looks like a hand because
i have to draw it within 1minute without sketch, which it was my weakness.

How black and white colours affect the draws.
-Using a black paper and colours to make the hand standout.
-I'm personally like the way it looks but i couldn't make it realistic because it wasn't my style so i changes it into what colour i want and what style am i into.
